Ernst Heinrich Roth was born in Markneukirchen in 1877. He learned the art of instrument-making from his father, Gustav Robert Roth, and studied under several violin-makers throughout Europe to perfect his craft. He became head of the Roth family firm in the early 20th century, producing violins of remarkable quality, and went on to become a widely-acclaimed maker whose work from the 1920s in particular is still sought after today. Roth often made exceptional reproductions of famous Cremonese violins by Stradivari, Guarneri, and Amati.  He chose the wood very carefully to ensure the best tone production. This violin from 1923 is an excellent example of the quality craftsmanship that came out of the E.H. Roth firm and of Markneukirchen during this time period. A copy of a 1718 Stradivari in pristine condition with a one-piece gorgeous back, it rings beautifully across all strings, with rich brilliancy in the upper register and a deep, gutsy sound in the lower. It would be an ideal violin for the advanced or professional player looking for a vast color palette that is versatile and easy to shape.
