PIERRE SILVESTRE

Born in Meurthe, France (1801-1859). Established his workshop in Lyon in 1829. Although he worked in partnership with his brother, Pierre was the dominant craftsman and his individually labeled work generally seems to be superior to that of the partnership. He made extremely fine Stradivari, Amati, and Guarneri copies in the manner of Vuillaume: large form but well proportioned and very neatly detailed. Silvestre’s works generally come with beautifully finished corners and magnificently cut scrolls. The quality of the wood is always maintained–belly wood of immaculate fineness and straightness of grain, with ribs and backs furnished using the handsomest materials.

DESCRIPTION

Built in 1843, the workmanship of this violin is finished with all the scrupulous care and attention characteristic of this Lyonnais artist — a beautifully worked scroll, two-piece back, original varnish, and corners with a detailed finish. A very playable instrument with a powerful sound. Excellent harmonics with a particularly strong and deep sound on the G string. The violin presents no damage or cracks and all maintenance and setup has been performed by our own professional in-house luthiers.
