A French cello bow made, in our opinion, by Jules Fetique. The round stick is mounted in the original ebony and silver fittings and branded ALBERT CARESSA A PARIS

A renowned French bow maker of the early 20th century, Jules Fétique (1875-1951) was born into a family of luthiers in Mirecourt, France. Son of violin maker Charles-Claude Fétique (1853-1911) and brother of celebrated bow maker Victor François Fétique (1872-1933), Jules apprenticed with Charles Nicolas Bazin II and Paul Émile Miquel, before moving to Paris, where he worked for Eugène Sartory, and occasionally collaborated with his brother. After leaving Sartory’s workshop in 1912, Fétique continued a working relationship with Sartory, while also working for the firm of Caressa & Français (Albert Caressa and Henri Français) after 1917. He won the prestigious title “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” in 1927, then partnered with violin maker André Dugad to establish a violin shop in 1934. In 1937, Fétique was awarded a “Diplôme d’Honneur” at the World’s Fair Exhibition held in Paris. Influenced by Sartory early in his career, Jules Fétique’s later bows show the influence of the school of Dominique Peccatte.
